The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for ensuring all welding and fabrication work complies with applicable codes, standards, and customer specifications, while operating within the framework of a unionized workforce. The CWI plays a key role in quality assurance, inspection, and compliance, while also promoting a culture of continual improvement, defect reduction, and customer satisfaction.
*Duties/Responsibilities:*

- Conduct visual and dimensional inspections of welds and fit ups in accordance with applicable codes (particularly AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.3, and D1.6) and job specifications.
- Perform welder procedure qualification and certification. Ensure welder qualifications and certifications are current and compliant with applicable codes and union jurisdictional requirements.
- Review welding procedure specifications (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualification (WPQ) documentation.
- Inspect cut-&-etch samples. Be an expert on customer retention periods maintaining the retention of samples.
- Maintain detailed and accurate inspection reports, weld maps, and other QA/QC documentation.
- Support continual improvement initiatives.
- Assist in root cause analysis for weld defects or process non-conformances.
- Participate in pre-job planning to align quality expectations and welding procedures with production supervisors and project leads.
- Assist in preparation for third-party inspections, audits, and customer quality assurance visits.
- Input in weld time evaluation for earned hours and costing purposes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
*Required Skills:*

- Strong expertise of structural welding processes of GMAW, and GTAW particularly AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.3, and D1.6
- Ability to interpret welding symbols, blueprints, and technical drawings.
- Proficiency in documentation and computer systems (e.g., Microsoft Office, QMS software).
- Defense industry experience preferred.

- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in welding inspection in a fabrication environment.
*Physical
Requirements:*

- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, particularly when performing inspections on the production floor or site visits.
- Must be able to lift to >25 pounds occasionally (e.g., lifting samples, quality testing equipment, or documentation).
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, or climb stairs/ladders occasionally, especially in industrial or manufacturing settings.
- Good visual acuity for inspecting products, reviewing detailed documents, and using measurement tools.
- Capability to work in environments with varying noise levels, temperatures, or exposure to manufacturing-related elements.
