CERTIFIED WELD
INSPECTION JOBS.
The first line of defense. Ensure structural integrity and code compliance from fit-up to final visual acceptance.
MISSION OBJECTIVES
The Quality Gatekeeper
You are the authority on the floor. As a CWI, you aren't just looking at beads; you are auditing the entire welding process. From verifying the WPS to checking pre-heat and interpass temperatures, you ensure the procedure is followed. You catch the defects that NDT misses—undercut, overlap, and profile issues—before they become expensive repairs.
- Verify joint preparation, fit-up alignment, and cleanliness prior to the first arc strike.
- Monitor in-process variables including voltage, amperage, travel speed, and pre-heat maintenance..
- Conduct final Visual Inspection (VT) to identify surface discontinuities per D1.1, API 1104, or ASME IX.
- Review and enforce Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).

PERSONNEL
STOP WATCHING BAD WELDS.
- CODE SPECIFICITY Don't waste time on structural gigs if you're a pipeline pro. Filter jobs by code: AWS D1.1, API 1104, or ASME Sec IX.
- SHIFT CLARITY Know the rotation before you mobilize. Filter for Day Shift, Night Shift, or specific 10/12-hour schedules.
- TOOLING POLICY Find employers who provide the full inspection kit (Bridge Cams, V-WACs, Temp Sticks) vs. "Bring Your Own Gear."
- TRAVEL RADIUS Set your geo-fence. Only see fabrication shop or field erection roles within your preferred driving distance.
RECRUITMENT
Hire Code Experts.
- ENDORSEMENT FILTER Need a Bridge specialist (D1.5) or a Seismic pro (D1.8)? Filter candidates by their specific code experience.
- PROCESS KNOWLEDGE Find CWIs who actually know the process nuances—SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, or GTAW—relevant to your shop.
- REPORTING RIGOR Target inspectors with a track record of clear, audit-proof daily reporting. No ambiguous "looks good" notes.
- CONFLICT READY Find inspectors who can hold the line on quality against production pressure without disrupting the entire job.
