What is an Integrity Engineer?
An Integrity Engineer is a specialized professional responsible for the long term reliability and safety of industrial assets. This role is essential in the oil, gas, power, and chemical sectors to prevent equipment failure and ensure environmental compliance. Unlike field inspectors who focus on data collection, Integrity Engineers focus on data analysis. They evaluate inspection reports to determine the current state of equipment and predict future performance based on degradation rates.
One of the primary responsibilities of this role is the development of Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) programs. Using codes like API 580 and API 581, these engineers identify high risk assets and prioritize them for maintenance or replacement. This approach allows industrial facilities to optimize their budgets while maintaining a high level of safety. They also perform Fitness-for-Service (FFS) assessments using API 579 standards to determine if a damaged component can remain in operation or if an immediate repair is required.
Success as an Integrity Engineer requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering or material science. Most professionals in this field hold a university degree and many pursue a Professional Engineer (PE) license. They must be proficient in working with various damage mechanisms such as corrosion, stress cracking, and fatigue. These engineers act as the technical authority within a facility. They provide the guidance necessary for owner-users to make critical decisions regarding plant life extension and turnaround planning.
